Notes & caveats

  • Working physicians (berufstätige Ärztinnen und Ärzte) registered with the state medical chambers, in all sectors: practices, hospitals, public authorities and others. Head count, not full-time equivalents.
  • Doctors are counted by the chamber they belong to, which is normally the state where they work, not where they live. City states (Hamburg, Bremen, Berlin) treat many patients from neighbouring states, which inflates their rates.
  • North Rhine-Westphalia combines the two chambers Nordrhein and Westfalen-Lippe.
  • Our calculation: working physicians ÷ Destatis population on 31.12.2025 × 100,000. The BÄK states one doctor per 187.4 inhabitants nationally. East = the five eastern states without Berlin.
  • The Bundesärztekammer is the umbrella body of the state medical chambers (public-law bodies); this is its own register statistic, not official statistics by Destatis.
